National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) Deputy Executive Director Mateo A. International Cooperation at Work! DSWD Undersecretary and NCDA’s  OIC/ED Alicia R. Bala , Global Cancer Ambassador and New Vois Association of the Philippines President Emer Rojas and wife Volet  cheer the first ride of new and lucky power wheelchair owner  Carla dela Cruz, another highlight of the December 2, 2011 “Asia Pacific’s Walk for the Rights of PWDs”.  Carla, an AFS-YES scholar and a cum laude graduate of Trinity University of Asia, BS Education major in SPED, looks forward to using her power cruiser in her future teaching career.

Other Korean team members who joined the ‘Walk’  aside from Dr. Lee and Mr. Choi were Prof. Yong-gil Jo of Gosin University Dept. of Welfare and Rehabilitation, Mr. Jin Woo Lee, Branch Chair, Association of Disabled People’s Rights Support, Bright Tomorrow Director Kyung Ja Lee and Good Job Center for Independent Living Assistant Kwanghee Choi.

The Korean delegates took the opportunity to join the “2nd Asia Pacific CBR Congress” hosted by the country last November 29-30, 2011, and urged NCDA to facilitate their exchange on rights issues on a regular basis, with their local counterpart people’s organizations and partners.

Proudly Filipino! Inspired by the 6th ASEAN Para Games’ theme “Ünited and rising..through sports for all”, the 10-man Philippine Team brings home nine major medals in the Chess competition in Solo, Indonesia last December 12-22, 2011. In spite of a very strong competition and new game’s format, the team still won three (3) gold, four (4) silver and two (2) bronze medals in the men’s category. Fatima A. Garon, Project Evaluation Officer I of NCDA has successfully completed her post-graduate program under the Australian Development Scholarship (ADS) for year 2011.  Ms. Garon studied Master of Social Science with Specialization on Human Service Management at University of Newcastle, Australia.  As part of the program a Re-Entry Action Plan (REAP) on Good Governance for Educational and Economic Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities will be implemented upon her return to the country.

To equip service-providers in effective provision of appropriate wheelchairs to  beneficiaries, the Latter-Day Saints  Charities (LDSC) held a 2-day workshop for  17 GO/NGO/PO participants from Quezon City , Caloocan City, NCR and San Mateo, Region IV-A  last October 24-25, 2011 at the NCDA Atrium.  It included demos on wheelchair-fitting, handling and securing, always in consultation with/consideration of the wheelchair-users.

Successful Inaugural IDPP Residency Period Comes to a Close

The Institute on Disability and Public Policy (IDPP)’s first residency period welcoming the incoming student cohort who will earn a Master’s of International Affairs in Comparative and International Disability Policy (CIDP) at American University’s School of International Service (AU SIS) ended on a high note last Friday, July 29. “This has been a fantastic two weeks,” stated Ambassador Luis Gallegos, Chairman of the Global UN Partnership for Inclusive Information and Communication Technologies; Chairman of the Global Universal Design Commission; former Ambassador of Ecuador to the United States; and an IDPP adjunct faculty member at AU SIS’ International Communication Program, who will teach a fall CIDP course on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. “I have very much enjoyed learning from and with you during this residency period, and I look forward to our journey together,” the Ambassador told CIDP students during his closing ceremony address.

Canon Donates Camera for Philippine Photography Bet in the 8th Global Work Skills Contest

Canon President and CEO Alan Chng hands over camera to Raph Torralba, hard of hearing member of “Visual Shot Club”, a group of deaf photographers, who recently teamed up with Canon and SM Supermalls on the “Photography with a Difference”. Mr. Torralba, Resource Coordinator of the Institute of Health and Wellness Philippines, will compete in the “8th International Abilympics” Photography Contest, Seoul, Korea on September 25-30, 2011. Canon shared willingness to provide the official camera for future International Abilympics Photography competitors. Leading the Philippine team to Korea is Abilympics Philippines Chairperson Mons T. Romulo. NCDA-TCD Chief Nelia R. de Jesus (extreme left) and Canon’s Corporate Communications Manager Margie Escueta, (extreme right), witnessed the July 6 turnover.

Ms. Escueta shows President Chng the     NCDA Magazine “Journey Beyond disABILITY” featuring Cebu deaf lensman Alnoe Paler,   another “Abilympics national champion” – recipient  of a Canon camera,  who she personally assisted way back 2007.

LA-based “Joy Missions for the Disabled” Team Meets with NCDA and Holds Field Visits to Local SPED Centers

A 10-man group from the Joy Missions for the Disabled” (JMD)met with NCDA Team of TCD Chief Nelia R. De Jesus,  RPCs Flerida  Labanon and Ruth Tacujan, for a briefing on the Council’s mandates and programs.

The meeting kicked off the visitors’’ field visits to Gen. Pio del Pilar SPED Center in Makati and Hospicio de San Jose in Manila, joined by Ms/ Labanon, TCD Project Evaluation Officer- Reginaldo Tolentino and  TCD Staff Precious Horvidalla.  The visits greatly inspired the JMD officials on their plan to set up 2 similar centers in Quezon City and Tagaytay for children with intellectual disabilities and orphans.

AFS International President Cites Impact of NCDA-AFS-IPP Partnership

American Field Service International President  Francisco “Tachi” Cazal, shows off AFS-KL-YES poster produced by NCDA,  in sync with AFS-IPP and DepEd last June 15 AFS Intercultural Evening at the Manila Polo Club.  Posters aim to upscale participation of students with disabilities, and promote a ‘disability-inclusive education’’ called for in the ‘’UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities”. DepEd Director and AFSer Joey Pelaez (3rd from left on the below right photo) will help distribute copies in selected regions during his DepEd official trips.

AFS 15th batcher and  AFS-IPP Partner Chair Bonnie Guerra (lower left photo), whose term opened up AFS-KL-YES program to students with disabilities in 2004, honored by AFS-IPP and AFS Int’l. President Casal for being the 2nd President of AFS Asia –Pacific Initiatives (AAI). To date, there  are now 14 scholars with disabilities who were young goodwill ambassadors who lived with foster parents and studied in America for 1 year, and two new scholars for schoolyear 2011-2012, sponsored by the United States Government, and private support groups.
