NCDA, Philspada holds Women’s Wheelchair Basketball tryout

The National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) together with the Philippine Sports Association for the Differently-Abled (Philspada) recently held a national tryout for Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team at the Philippine Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Six (6) women with disabilities participated in the tryout pool conducted by head coaches for men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball Vernon Perea and John Rey Escalante of Philspada. These women include Patricia Camille Castro of Quezon City, Jean Delos Reyes of Las Piñas City, Leah Broqueza of San Pedro, Laguna and Kimberlee Dangayo, Cendy Asusano and Cecilia Nacero of Tahanang Walang Hagdanan.

The trainees were introduced to wheelchair basketball, lectures and hands-on training on the proper warm-up drills, handling the ball, passing, dribbling, shooting and other basic techniques in wheelchair basketball.

“We are hoping to form a competitive national team for women’s wheelchair basketball this year in time for the forthcoming international tournaments,” Perea said.

The 2019 Women’s U 25 Wheelchair World Championships are slated on May 22-30 in Suphandburi, Thailand.

Perea added that the Philippines will be hosting the 10th ASEAN Para Games in January 2020. The wheelchair basketball is included in the 22 sports in the ASEAN Para Games. Other sports include archery, athletics, badminton, boccia, cycling, football five-a-side, football seven-a-side, goal balljudo, power lifting, sailing shooting, swimming, tenpin bowling, table tennis, volley-sitting, wheelchair dance sport wheelchair fencing, wheelchair rugby, and wheelchair tennis.

The Philippines last hosted the ASEAN Para Games in 2015, with the country finishing sixth in the medal standings with 19 gold medals. It is a biannual multi-sports event held after every Southeast Asian Games involving athletes with disabilities from 11 Southeast Asia countries.

Rizalio Sanchez, Chief of Information, Education and Communications Division of NCDA who also organize the wheelchair basketball tryout stressed the commitment of the agency to promote sports for persons with disabilities, especially at the grassroots in order to develop more potential national Para-athletes who would represent the country in various international sports competitions. “We will continue to support this kind of activity to invite more women with disabilities to be involved in sports,” he stated. ###

Librong magpapaalala ng kahapon, mapapakinabangan ngayon, magagamit sa darating na panahon

Ito po ay isang aklat na nagsasalaysay ng unang bahagi ng aking buhay. Mga bahagi ng aking buhay na siksik ng saya mula sa mga karanasang naganap nung maiigsi pa ang aking mga binti at maliliit pa ang mga kamay. Na kung inyo pong babasahin ay may posibilidad na kayo ay mapangiti, mapatawa at mapawi ang pagkatamlay.

Bukod po rito ay nagtataglay din ito ng mga aral at paalaala na sa ating pamumuhay ay maaari nating magamit. Mga aral na sa kaabalahan natin sa mundo ay posibleng nakakalimutan na at nawawaglit. Pero dahil layunin po ng aklat na ito na ipaalaala satin ang mga kabutihang-asal na ito ay may tsansang kung isasapuso natin ito ay magdudulot ito ng magandang kapalit.

At panghuli po ay kapupulutan din ang librong ito ng mga kaisipang naglalahad at nagsasalarawan sa iba’t-ibang uri ng propesyon o hanapbuhay ng mga taong ating nakakasalamuha. Mga hanapbuhay na sa unang tingin ay aakalain lang natin na madali at puro ginhawa. Subalit kung pakakalimiin natin ang sakripisyo nila sa kanilang ginagawa na sa babasahing ito ay aking inilathala ay malalaman natin kung gaano sila karangal at kadakila.

Kaya sa inyo po na ngayon ay nakatingin sa librong aking pinaghirapan. Hiling ko po ay inyo sana itong tangkilikin at suportahan. Isa po itong aklat na ang hatid ay inspirasyon at positibong pananaw kahit pa may pagsubok na pinagdaraanan. Na mapapakinabangan natin ngayon at magagamit sa kinabukasan.

“Maaaring nawala man ang aking paningin, ngunit sa hamon ng buhay ay ako’y magpapatuloy pa rin.”
